    A HEALTHY CO-PARENTING

Healthy co-parenting is basically putting the kids first, even when things between adults are complicated. It’s not about being best friends. It’s about being a solid team for your child.

What it looks like in practice

    • Kid-first mindset: Decisions start with “what’s best for them?” not “who’s right?” School, health, discipline, birthdays. All of it.
    • Respectful communication: Keep it business-like and calm. Text about schedules, pickups, fees. No insults, no bringing up old relationship issues in front of the kids.
    • Consistency: Similar rules in both homes helps. Bedtime, homework, screen time, chores. Kids feel safer when both houses aren’t total opposites.
    • No using kids as messengers: Talk directly to the other parent. Don’t ask “tell your dad…” and don’t put kids in the middle of adult problems.
    • Support the other parent: Don’t badmouth them to the kids. Kids love both of you. When you speak well of the other parent, your child feels secure loving both too.
    • Flexibility: Plans will change. Sickness, work, events. A quick “can we switch Saturday?” goes a long way.

    What helps it stay healthy

    • Clear boundaries: Who pays what, pickup times, who makes medical decisions. Write it down so there’s less confusion.
    • Separate the past from parenting: You can co-parent well without being together or even liking each other much.
    • Celebrate together when possible: School events, graduations. You don’t have to sit together, but showing up for the same things matters to kids.

    What to avoid

    • Competing: gifts, trips, “fun parent vs strict parent”
    • Using money or visitation as punishment
    • Sharing adult details with the kids

It’s hard work, but kids with co-parents who cooperate do better in school, emotionally, and socially. The goal is two stable homes instead of one broken one.

Is this something you’re navigating right now? If you want, I can help you draft a simple co-parenting schedule or communication template that keeps things smooth.
