A “real” balanced diet just means giving your body all the fuel types it needs, in the right amounts, without overcomplicating it.
Think of your plate like this:
The 4 core pieces
- Carbs for energy: These are your fuel. Go for whole versions that release energy slowly.
Examples: rice, yam, plantain, oats, sweet potato, whole grain bread, beans - Protein for repair: Builds muscle, heals, and keeps you full.
Examples: fish, chicken, eggs, beans, lentils, tofu, nuts, lean meat - Fats for hormones + brain: Don’t skip them. Focus on healthy ones.
Examples: avocado, olive oil, groundnuts, palm oil in moderation, fatty fish like sardine/mackerel - Vitamins + minerals + fiber: For immunity, digestion, and skin.
Examples: ugu, spinach, okra, tomatoes, carrots, peppers, oranges, pawpaw, banana
3 simple rules that make it work
- Variety + Color: If your plate has 3+ colors of natural foods, you’re probably covering your bases.
- Portion balance: Rough guide per meal: 1/2 plate veggies + fruits, 1/4 plate protein, 1/4 plate carbs. Add a thumb of healthy fat.
- Water + Limit the extras: Water as main drink. Keep sugar, fried foods, and processed snacks as “sometimes” foods, not everyday foods.
What a day could look like in Nigeria
- Breakfast: Oats or akara + eggs + fruit + water
- Lunch: Rice + beans + fish/chicken + vegetable stew + salad
- Dinner: Boiled yam or sweet potato + vegetable soup + protein + fruit
- Snacks: Groundnuts, banana, cucumber, garden egg
You don’t need expensive “superfoods.” Local foods already give you a solid balance. The key is consistency, not perfection.
Are you trying to build a meal plan for weight, energy, or just general health? Then you need the right balance diet that makes your body glow..
